An X-Ray Orbit (LAT) is a lateral (side view) X-ray of the orbits, the bony cavities in the skull that house the eyes. This imaging test provides a detailed view of the side of the eye socket, including the bones, muscles, and surrounding tissues.
It is commonly used to detect:
• Orbital fractures (due to trauma)
• Foreign bodies in the eye (especially metallic)
• Tumors or abnormal growths
• Infections or inflammation
• Pre-MRI screening to check for metal fragments in the eye
Test Preparation
• No fasting or special preparation is needed.
• Remove all metallic objects from the head and face area:
o Eyeglasses
o Earrings, nose rings, piercings
o Hairpins, headbands
o Eye makeup (some contain metallic particles)
• Inform the radiology staff if:
o You are pregnant or may be pregnant
o You’ve had recent eye surgeries or injuries
