Test Preparation
Usually, no special preparation is needed, but here are some important points:
• Clothing: You may be asked to change into a hospital gown to avoid interference from clothing.
• Remove metal items: Take off belts, jewelry, zippers, or any metal objects near your back or waist.
• Bowel Preparation (if advised): Sometimes, a mild laxative or enema is recommended a day before to reduce bowel gas or stool that could obstruct the spine view.
• Fasting: Not required.
• Pregnancy: Inform the radiographer if you are or might be pregnant.
During the Test
• For the AP view, you’ll lie on your back; the X-ray beam is directed from front to back.
• For the Lateral view, you’ll lie on your side or stand sideways for a side-view image of the spine.
• The technician will position you and may ask you to hold your breath briefly to prevent movement.
• The test is painless, and each view takes just a few minutes.
After the Test
• You can resume your normal activities immediately.
• A radiologist will interpret the X-rays, and your doctor will review the findings with you.
