The Vitamin A Test measures the levels of retinol (the active form of Vitamin A) in the blood. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for vision, immune function, skin health, and cellular growth. It is found in two primary forms: preformed Vitamin A (retinol) in animal-based foods and pro-vitamin A carotenoids (such as beta-carotene) in plant-based foods.

Description

Why It’s Done:
This test is used to:
• Diagnose Vitamin A deficiency: To assess if someone has insufficient levels of Vitamin A, which can lead to night blindness, immune system problems, or skin issues.
• Evaluate overdose: To detect Vitamin A toxicity, which can occur due to excessive supplementation, leading to symptoms like nausea, headaches, or liver damage.
• Monitor treatment: To evaluate Vitamin A levels in individuals receiving treatment for deficiency or toxicity, particularly in conditions like malabsorption (e.g., celiac disease or cystic fibrosis).

Sample Collection:
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm for this test.
