Description
Purpose of the Test:
• Assess bioavailable testosterone levels, which are more indicative of hormonal activity
• Diagnose conditions such as hypogonadism, andropause, infertility, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• Monitor testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)
• Investigate symptoms of low libido, fatigue, decreased muscle mass, or sexual dysfunction
• Evaluate testosterone levels in individuals with disorders of sexual development
What the Test Involves:
• A blood sample is drawn, usually from a vein in the arm
• The serum is analyzed to measure the free testosterone level, which reflects the active hormone available for biological functions
• This test is often ordered alongside total testosterone measurements to better evaluate hormone imbalances
