The Sucrose Lysis Test is a screening test used primarily to detect Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH), a rare acquired blood disorder. The test evaluates the sensitivity of red blood cells (RBCs) to lysis (destruction) when exposed to a low ionic strength sucrose solution, which promotes complement activation.

    Description

    Purpose of the Test:
    • Screen for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH)
    • Identify complement-sensitive red blood cells
    • Support diagnosis in patients with unexplained hemolytic anemia, hemoglobinuria, or bone marrow failure

    What the Test Involves:
    • A blood sample is collected from the patient
    • The RBCs are incubated in a sucrose solution
    • The solution enhances complement binding, and increased hemolysis indicates PNH or a related condition
