The sickling test is a laboratory procedure used to detect the presence of abnormal hemoglobin, specifically hemoglobin S, which is associated with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait. During the test, a blood sample is taken and exposed to a chemical agent (like sodium metabisulfite) that removes oxygen from the blood. If hemoglobin S is present, the red blood cells will change from their normal round shape to a characteristic sickle or crescent shape under a microscope.
