Categories: ,

The Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG) is a test that measures the difference in albumin levels between the serum (blood) and ascitic fluid (fluid accumulated in the abdomen). The gradient is calculated by subtracting the albumin level of the ascitic fluid from the serum albumin level. It helps in determining the cause of ascites, a condition characterized by fluid buildup in the abdomen.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:
    • To determine the cause of ascites, especially when it is difficult to distinguish between causes like liver disease or heart failure
    • To evaluate patients with cirrhosis, liver failure, or heart failure
    • To distinguish between portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the liver’s blood vessels) and other causes of ascites
    • To monitor patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis for complications related to fluid accumulation
    • To assist in making decisions about treatment, such as the need for a paracentesis procedure (removal of excess fluid from the abdomen)

    Preparation:
    • No special preparation is typically required for this test.
    • A blood sample (serum) and ascitic fluid (fluid from the abdomen) will be collected.
    • Inform your doctor if you have any conditions that could affect albumin levels, such as kidney disease or malnutrition.
    • Follow any additional instructions from your healthcare provider if further tests or procedures are planned.
