Why It’s Done:
• To diagnose rotavirus infection in individuals, particularly in infants and young children, who may experience symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and fever
• To distinguish rotavirus infection from other causes of gastroenteritis
• To help manage outbreaks of rotavirus, particularly in daycare centers or hospitals
• To determine the cause of dehydration in children due to diarrhea and vomiting
Preparation:
• No special preparation is typically required for this test.
• A stool sample will be collected, usually in a clean container.
• It is important to collect the sample as soon as symptoms appear for accurate detection of the virus.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your child or you have recently been exposed to others with similar symptoms or have traveled to areas with a high incidence of rotavirus.
