Description
Why It’s Done:
• To evaluate how well the bone marrow is producing red blood cells
• To help diagnose and monitor conditions like anemia, bone marrow disorders, or blood loss
• To assess recovery after treatments such as chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant
• To monitor the effectiveness of therapies for anemia (e.g., iron supplements, vitamin B12, or erythropoietin)
• To help differentiate between different types of anemia (e.g., caused by blood loss vs. reduced production)
Preparation:
• No special preparation is generally needed for a reticulocyte count.
• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as some drugs can affect blood cell production.
• Follow any additional instructions if the reticulocyte count is part of a broader panel of blood tests.
