The Parvo Virus B19 – IgG Test is a blood test used to detect the presence of IgG antibodies against Parvovirus B19, a virus that causes fifth disease (also known as erythema infectiosum or slapped cheek syndrome). The presence of IgG antibodies indicates that an individual has been previously exposed to the virus and has developed immunity. This test does not detect an active infection but rather confirms past exposure to the virus.
Parvovirus B19 is typically mild in healthy individuals but can cause serious complications in pregnant women, individuals with weakened immune systems, or those with certain blood

    Why It’s Done:
The Parvo Virus B19 – IgG Test is typically ordered to:
    • Confirm past exposure to Parvovirus B19, particularly in individuals who may have symptoms of fifth disease or in those who have been in contact with someone who has the infection.
    • Assess immunity in pregnant women, as Parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy can lead to complications like miscarriage, stillbirth, or hydrops fetalis (a serious condition involving fluid buildup in a fetus).
    • Diagnose prior infection in individuals with suspected parvovirus B19 exposure or a history of symptoms (e.g., rash or joint pain).
    • Evaluate risk in immunocompromised individuals who may be more susceptible to the virus and its effects.

    Preparation:
    • No special preparation is usually required for this test.
    • Fasting is not necessary for a Parvo Virus B19 – IgG test.
    • Inform your doctor if you have any recent symptoms of Parvovirus B19, or if you are pregnant, as the test results may impact the monitoring or management of the pregnancy.
    • A blood sample will be drawn from a vein in your arm for testing.
