Description
Why It’s Done:
The Panfungal DNA PCR test is typically ordered when there is a suspicion of systemic or invasive fungal infections, especially in patients where:
• Traditional fungal cultures are inconclusive or take too long.
• Early detection is critical, such as in immunocompromised patients (e.g., transplant recipients, cancer patients, HIV-positive individuals).
• There is a need to identify rare, atypical, or emerging fungal pathogens.
• A fungal infection is suspected in sterile body sites, such as the brain (fungal meningitis), lungs, or bloodstream.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is usually required.
• Preparation may depend on the type of specimen collected:
o Blood: Routine blood draw, no fasting required.
o CSF or tissue biopsy: May require fasting or pre-procedure instructions.
o BAL or sputum: You may be instructed not to eat or drink before the procedure.
• Inform your doctor if you are taking any antifungal medications, as they may influence test sensitivity.
• Follow specific sample collection guidelines provided by your healthcare provider or laboratory.
