Description
Why It’s Done:
The osteocalcin test is used to:
• Evaluate bone formation in metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis or Paget’s disease.
• Monitor response to osteoporosis treatment, including hormone therapy or bisphosphonates.
• Investigate abnormal bone turnover in conditions like hyperparathyroidism.
• Occasionally support diagnosis in bone growth disorders or vitamin D deficiencies.
Preparation:
• Fasting (typically overnight) may be recommended, depending on your doctor’s instructions.
• The blood sample is usually taken in the morning, as osteocalcin levels can vary throughout the day.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you are taking:
o Calcium supplements
o Vitamin D
o Hormonal medications (e.g., estrogen, testosterone)
• No other special preparations are generally required.
