The Mumps IgM Test is a blood test used to detect Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a recent mumps virus infection. IgM antibodies are usually the first to appear after infection and are an indicator of acute or recent mumps.

This test is commonly performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or similar immunoassay methods, and results are typically available within a few days.

Description

Why It’s Done:
The Mumps IgM test is performed to:
• Diagnose recent or current mumps infection, especially in individuals showing symptoms such as swollen salivary glands, fever, headache, and jaw pain.
• Confirm infection in cases of mumps outbreaks or public health investigations.
• Differentiate mumps from other causes of parotitis or glandular swelling.
• Identify asymptomatic carriers or confirm diagnosis in people with mild or atypical symptoms.
• Support diagnosis in unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status.

Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is needed.
• A sample of blood is collected from a vein, usually in the arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you’ve been recently vaccinated against mumps, as it may affect the test result.
