An MRI Fistulogram is a specialized imaging test used to visualize and assess fistulas—abnormal connections between two hollow organs or between an organ and the skin. A fistula can develop as a result of infection, surgery, injury, or certain medical conditions like Crohn’s disease. MRI fistulogram helps in detecting fistulas in various parts of the body, including:

  • Perianal or rectal fistulas (common in patients with Crohn’s disease or infections)
  • Vesicovaginal fistulas (connections between the bladder and vagina)
  • Enterocutaneous fistulas (connections between the intestines and the skin)
  • Urinary tract fistulas
  • Abdominal fistulas

The MRI fistulogram uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a special contrast agent to provide detailed images of the fistula, helping doctors evaluate its size, location, and any associated complications such as infection or abscesses.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    General Preparation:

    • Wear comfortable clothing without metal items like zippers, buttons, or jewelry. A hospital gown may be provided for you.
    • Remove metal objects (e.g., jewelry, piercings) as they can interfere with the MRI.
    • Inform the technician if you have any metal implants or medical devices (e.g., pacemakers, stents, aneurysm clips) in your body.
    • Inform the doctor if you have had any previous surgeries or infections that may involve the area being examined.

    Fasting & Medication:

    •  Fasting: Depending on the location of the fistula and the use of contrast, you may need to fast for 4-6 hours
    • before the MRI. Your doctor will give you specific instructions.
    •  Medications: Continue taking any prescribed medications unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
    •  If a contrast agent will be used, notify your doctor if you have any allergies to contrast material, or if you have
    • kidney issues or any other conditions that may require special care.

     Special Considerations:

    •  Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as special considerations might be necessary.
    •  If you have claustrophobia, discuss this with your doctor beforehand. Some patients may need sedation or additional support to remain still during the procedure.
    •  If the fistula is located near the rectum or genital area, you may be asked to perform certain tasks, such as cleaning the area or using a contrast agent inserted through a catheter, depending on the type of fistula.
