An MRI CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) Flow Study is a specialized MRI scan used to evaluate the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain and spinal cord. This test is commonly used to diagnose:

  •  Hydrocephalus (abnormal CSF buildup in the brain)
  • CSF flow obstructions (blockages in normal fluid movement)
  • Chiari malformation (a condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal)
  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) (which can cause memory loss, balance issues, and urinary incontinence)

    Test Preparation

    To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    General Preparation:

    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or accessories.
    • Remove jewelry, piercings, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and metallic objects.
    •  Inform the technician if you have metal implants (pacemakers, aneurysm clips, stents, spinal rods, screws, plates, or cochlear implants).

    Fasting & Medication:

    • No fasting required unless contrast dye is needed (your doctor will inform you).
    • Continue taking prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise.
    • If contrast is required, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease or contrast allergies.

    Special Considerations:

    • Inform the technician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
    • If you have claustrophobia, discuss sedation options with your doctor.
    •  Some cases may require additional MRI sequences to enhance CSF visualization.
