An MRI Cisternography is a specialized MRI scan used to assess the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathways in the brain and spinal cord. This test helps detect:

  • CSF leaks (such as in spontaneous or post-traumatic cases)
  •  Hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain)
  •  Arachnoid cysts or other fluid-related abnormalities
  • Obstruction in CSF flow
  • Brain and spinal cord abnormalities

Description

Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

General Preparation:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or accessories.
  • Remove jewelry, piercings, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and metallic objects.
  • Inform the technician if you have metal implants (pacemakers, aneurysm clips, stents, screws, plates, or cochlear implants).

Fasting & Medication:

  • Fasting may be required (your doctor will provide instructions if needed).
  • Continue taking prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise.
  •  If contrast dye is required, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease or contrast allergies.

Special Considerations:

  •  Inform the technician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have claustrophobia, discuss sedation options with your doctor.

Some patients may require a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) before the scan to introduce contrast dye into the cerebrospinal fluid.
