MRI Brain + CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) Flow Studies is a specialized imaging technique used to evaluate the movement of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain and spinal cord. This test helps detect:

• Obstruction or blockages in CSF pathways
• Hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain)
• Chiari malformations
• Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
• CSF leaks or flow abnormalities

It is often performed using Phase-Contrast MRI (PC-MRI) to measure the velocity and direction of CSF flow.

Description

Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

  • Fasting
    • Fasting is usually not required, but some facilities may request 4-6 hours of fasting if contrast dye is used.
  • Hydration
    • Drink plenty of water before the test unless instructed otherwise.
    • Staying hydrated helps clear the contrast dye from your system if used.
  • Medications
    • Take your regular medications unless advised otherwise.
    • Inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, diabetes medication (like Metformin), or have kidney disease, as contrast dye may require precautions.
  •  Allergies & Medical Conditions
    • Inform the radiologist if you have a history of contrast dye allergies.
    • If you have asthma or breathing difficulties, let the technician know in advance.
  • Clothing & Accessories
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (zippers, buttons, jewelry, underwires, or belts).
    • You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
  • Implant or Device Precautions
    • Inform the technician if you have metal implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or any metallic objects in your body, as they may interfere with the MRI.
  • Claustrophobia & Anxiety
    • If you have claustrophobia, discuss with your doctor about taking a mild sedative before the test.
    • Some facilities offer open MRI options for patient comfort.
  • During the Procedure
    • You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI scanner.
    • The machine will take detailed images of the brain and CSF flow using specialized imaging sequences.
    • If contrast dye is needed, it will be injected into a vein (usually in the arm) to enhance visibility.
    • The MRI scanner makes loud noises; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
    • The scan typically takes 45-60 minutes.
  • After the Test
    • No downtime; you can resume normal activities unless sedated.
    • Drink plenty of water to help eliminate the contrast dye.
    • Results are typically available within a few days.
