MRI Brain + Cisternography is a specialized imaging test used to evaluate the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathways, brain structures, and surrounding cisterns (fluid-filled spaces in the brain). It is often performed to detect:

• CSF leaks
• Hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain)
• Arachnoid cysts
• Chiari malformations
• Meningitis or other brain infections

This test may involve the use of a contrast dye (gadolinium-based) to enhance visualization of the CSF pathways.

Description

Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

  • Fasting
    • Fasting for 4-6 hours before the test may be required if contrast is used.
    • If no contrast is needed, fasting is usually not necessary.
  • Hydration
    • Drink plenty of water before the test unless instructed otherwise.
    • After the scan, staying hydrated helps flush out the contrast dye from your system.
  • Medications
    • Take your regular medications unless advised otherwise.
    • Inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, diabetes medication (e.g., Metformin), or have kidney disease (as contrast dye requires caution in these cases).
  • Allergies & Medical Conditions
    • Inform the radiologist if you have a history of contrast dye allergies or kidney issues.
    • If you have asthma, breathing difficulties, or past allergic reactions, extra precautions may be needed.
  • Clothing & Accessories
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (zippers, jewelry, belts, underwires, etc.).
    • You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
  • Implant or Device Precautions
    • Inform the technician if you have metal implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or any metallic objects in your body, as they can interfere with the MRI.
  •  Claustrophobia & Anxiety
    • If you have claustrophobia, discuss with your doctor about a mild sedative before the test.
    • Some facilities offer open MRI options for comfort.
  • During the Procedure
    • You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI scanner.
    • If contrast dye is needed, it will be injected into a vein (usually in the arm) to enhance imaging.
    • The machine makes loud noises; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
    • The scan typically takes 45-60 minutes.
  • After the Test
    • No downtime; you can resume normal activities unless sedated.
    • Drink plenty of water to help eliminate the contrast dye.
    • Results are usually available within a few days
