MRI Angiography (MRA) of the brain is a specialized MRI scan that provides detailed images of blood vessels in the brain without using X-rays. This test helps detect abnormalities in the brain’s blood supply, such as:

• Aneurysms (weakened blood vessels that may rupture)
• Strokes or blockages (ischemia)
• Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) (abnormal blood vessel connections)
• Carotid artery disease (narrowing of major brain arteries)
• Blood clots or vascular tumors
MRA can be performed with or without contrast dye depending on the case.

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    Pre-Test Guidelines:
    • Fasting:
If contrast dye is used, fast for 4-6 hours before the test.
If no contrast is required, fasting is not needed.
    • Hydration:
Drink plenty of water unless instructed otherwise.
    • Medications:
Take regular medications unless advised otherwise.
If you take blood thinners or diabetes medications (e.g., Metformin), inform your doctor.
    • Allergy & Medical History:
Inform your doctor if you have a history of contrast dye allergies.
Notify the doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, etc.).
    • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding:
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as contrast use may require precautions.
On the Day of the Test:
    • Clothing & Accessories:
Wear loose-fitting clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, hearing aids, glasses, and metallic objects before the scan.
    • Avoid Caffeine & Smoking:
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking for 12 hours before the test, as they may affect blood vessel function.
During the MRI Angiography (MRA) Brain Scan:
    • The scan takes 30-60 minutes.
    • If contrast dye is required, it will be injected through an IV line.
    • The MRI machine makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
    • You must remain still while the images are taken.
