Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU) is a specialized MRI scan used to evaluate the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It provides detailed images without radiation and is often used to diagnose:

• Kidney stones
• Urinary tract obstructions
• Congenital kidney abnormalities
• Ureteral strictures (narrowing of the ureters)
• Vesicoureteral reflux (backflow of urine into the kidneys)
• Kidney tumors or cysts
• Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys due to urine buildup)

MR Urography can be performed as:

1. Non-contrast MR Urography (relies on the body’s natural urine flow).
2. Contrast-enhanced MR Urography (uses gadolinium contrast dye to improve visualization).

Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

1. Pre-Test Guidelines:
• Fasting:
If contrast dye is required, you may need to fast for 4-6 hours before the test.
If no contrast is used, fasting may not be necessary.
• Hydration:
You may be advised to drink plenty of water before the scan to ensure good urine flow for better imaging.
• Medications:
Inform your doctor about any medications, especially diuretics, kidney medications, or contrast allergies.
If you have kidney disease, a kidney function test (creatinine test) may be required before contrast injection.
• Allergy & Medical History:
Notify your doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, aneurysm clips) as MRI uses strong magnetic fields.
• Claustrophobia:
If you are claustrophobic, discuss mild sedation options with your doctor before the test.

2. On the Day of the Test:
• Clothing & Accessories:
Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, watches, hearing aids, and metallic objects before the test.
• Bladder Preparation:
You may be asked to arrive with a full or partially full bladder to enhance imaging quality.
• Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol:
Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as they may affect kidney function.

3. During the MR Urography Scan:
• The test takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the imaging type.
• You will lie still inside the MRI machine while images are taken.
• If contrast dye is used, it will be injected through an IV line. You may feel a cool sensation when the dye enters your body.
• The MRI machine makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
