MR Urography with MRI Abdomen is a non-invasive MRI scan that provides a detailed evaluation of both:

1. Urinary System – Kidneys, ureters, and bladder (MR Urography)
2. Abdominal Organs – Liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, intestines, and surrounding structures (MRI Abdomen)

This combined imaging is useful for diagnosing:

• Kidney stones or urinary tract obstructions
• Kidney tumors, cysts, or infections
• Congenital urinary tract abnormalities
• Hydronephrosis (swelling of kidneys due to urine blockage)
• Liver, pancreas, or gallbladder diseases
• Abdominal masses, tumors, or inflammation
• Urinary reflux (urine flowing back into the kidneys)

MR Urography can be performed as:
• Non-contrast MR Urography (uses natural urine flow for imaging)
• Contrast-enhanced MR Urography (uses gadolinium contrast dye for better visualization)

    Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, follow these preparation guideline:

    1. Pre-Test Guidelines:
    • Fasting:
If contrast dye is used, you may need to fast for 4-6 hours before the test.
If no contrast is used, fasting may not be necessary.
    • Hydration:
You may be asked to drink plenty of water before the scan to ensure good urine flow for better imaging.
    • Bladder Preparation:
You may be required to arrive with a full or partially full bladder to enhance image quality.
    • Medications:
o Inform your doctor about any medications, especially:
    Diuretics (may affect urine flow)
Blood thinners (if biopsy is needed)
    Kidney medications
If you have kidney disease, a creatinine test may be required before receiving contrast dye.
    • Allergy & Medical History:
Inform your doctor if you have contrast dye allergies.
Notify your doctor if you have metal implants (pacemakers, artificial joints, aneurysm clips) as MRI uses strong magnetic fields.
    • Claustrophobia:
If you are claustrophobic, discuss mild sedation options with your doctor before the test.

    2. On the Day of the Test:
    • Clothing & Accessories:
Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing without metal parts (zippers, buttons, or wires).
Remove jewelry, watches, hearing aids, and metallic objects before the test.
    • Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol:
Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as they may affect kidney and liver function.
    • Diabetic Patients:
If you have diabetes and take metformin, consult your doctor, as it may need to be stopped before the test.

    3. During the MR Urography + MRI Abdomen Scan:
    • The test takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the imaging type.
    • You will lie still inside the MRI machine while images are taken.
    • If contrast dye is used:
It will be injected through an IV line.
You may feel a cool sensation when the dye enters your body.
    • The MRI machine makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones may be provided.
