The Microalbumin 24-Hour Urine Test measures the amount of albumin (a type of protein) in the urine collected over a 24-hour period. Albumin is normally present in the blood, but when the kidneys are damaged, small amounts of albumin can leak into the urine. This test is specifically designed to detect microalbuminuria—a condition in which the level of albumin in the urine is higher than normal but still lower than the level detectable in a standard urine protein test.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:
This test is commonly used to:
    • Detect early signs of kidney damage, especially in people with diabetes or hypertension.
    • Monitor kidney health in individuals with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, which can lead to diabetic nephropathy or other forms of kidney disease.
    • Assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases since kidney problems are often associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
    • Evaluate kidney function in patients who are being treated for kidney-related conditions.
Microalbuminuria is often the first sign of kidney damage and may occur years before more severe kidney problems or kidney failure are detected through other tests.

    Preparation:
    • Collect urine over a 24-hour period, following the instructions carefully.
o Start by discarding the first urine of the day (this sample is not used).
o Collect all urine in the provided container for the next 24 hours, including the first urine the following morning.
o Keep the container cool by refrigerating it during the collection period.
    • Avoid exercise or activities that could affect urine protein levels prior to the test.
    • Inform your healthcare provider of any medications you’re taking, as some drugs (like aspirin, ACE inhibitors, or diuretics) can influence the results.
