Description
Why It’s Done:
The MMA urine test is used to:
• Evaluate vitamin B12 deficiency, especially when standard blood tests (like serum B12) do not provide conclusive results.
• Diagnose and monitor conditions associated with B12 deficiency, such as:
o Pernicious anemia
o Neuropathy (nerve damage)
o Megaloblastic anemia
• Assess the severity of B12 deficiency and guide appropriate treatment.
• Detect conditions that affect vitamin B12 absorption or metabolism, such as malabsorption disorders, gastric surgery, or autoimmune diseases affecting the stomach lining.
Preparation:
• Collect urine over a 24-hour period, following these steps:
o Begin by discarding the first urine sample in the morning.
o Collect all urine for the next 24 hours in the provided container, including the first urine the following morning.
o Refrigerate the urine sample or keep it cool during the collection period.
• Avoid intense physical exercise before and during the collection period, as it may affect the test results.
• Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or health conditions you have, as some substances (e.g., antibiotics or medications for diabetes) may affect the results.
• Ensure proper hydration, but avoid drinking excessive amounts of fluids in the hours leading up to and during urine collection.
