Why It’s Done:
This test is recommended when there is suspicion of mercury exposure or toxicity, especially in individuals who may be exposed through:
• Occupational environments (e.g., mining, manufacturing)
• Certain alternative medicines or cosmetics
• Eating mercury-contaminated fish or seafood
• Accidental ingestion or inhalation of mercury-containing substances
Preparation:
• Avoid seafood for 3–5 days before and during the test, unless instructed otherwise, as it may temporarily raise mercury levels.
• Do not collect the first urine of the day, but collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including the first urine the following morning.
• Store the collected urine in the provided container and refrigerate it or keep it cool during the collection period.
• Inform your doctor of any supplements, medications, or herbal products you’re taking.
Always follow your healthcare provider’s specific instructions for accurate results.
