Why It’s Done:
The test is performed to:
1. Assess Magnesium Levels:
o Determine if magnesium loss through urine is abnormally high or low.
2. Diagnose Magnesium Imbalance:
o Investigate causes of hypomagnesemia (low blood magnesium) or hypermagnesemia (high blood magnesium).
3. Evaluate Kidney Function:
o Check how the kidneys handle magnesium, especially in conditions like kidney disease.
4. Monitor Treatment:
o Assess the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation or treatment for related disorders.
Preparation:
• Diet:
o Maintain a normal diet during the urine collection period unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
• Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, as some can affect magnesium levels (e.g., diuretics, magnesium supplements).
• Urine Collection:
o Follow instructions carefully for a 24-hour urine collection:
Discard the first urine sample when you start collecting.
Collect all urine for the next 24 hours, including the last sample at the end of the period.
Keep the collection container refrigerated or in a cool place.
• Hydration:
o Drink fluids as usual during the collection period.
