Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is usually ordered when a healthcare provider suspects an imbalance in magnesium levels due to symptoms or underlying health conditions. It may be recommended for patients experiencing:
• Muscle cramps or weakness
• Irregular heartbeat or palpitations
• Fatigue or confusion
• Nausea or vomiting
• Seizures (in severe deficiency)
Preparation:
• Fasting is not typically required, but follow your doctor’s instructions.
• Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you’re taking, especially magnesium-containing antacids, diuretics, or laxatives, as these can affect test results.
• A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually from the arm.
