The Kidney Function Test (KFT) or Renal Function Test (RFT) is a group of blood and urine tests that assess how well the kidneys are working. It measures various parameters such as:
• Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
• Serum Creatinine
• Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate)
• Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) (calculated)
• Urine analysis (sometimes included)
These tests help evaluate the kidneys’ ability to filter waste products, balance fluids, and maintain electrolyte levels.

Description

Why It’s Done:

The KFT/RFT is performed to:
1. Assess Kidney Health:
o Detect early signs of kidney disease or damage.
2. Monitor Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):
o Track progression and response to treatment.
3. Investigate Symptoms:
o Symptoms like swelling, fatigue, changes in urine output, or unexplained high blood pressure.
4. Evaluate Electrolyte Imbalance:
o Diagnose problems related to sodium, potassium, and acid-base balance.
5. Monitor Effects of Medications:
o Check kidney function before and during treatment with drugs that can affect the kidneys.

Preparation:

• Fasting:
o Usually 8-12 hours fasting is recommended before the blood sample is taken. Water is allowed.
• Medications:
o Inform your doctor about all medications, as some can affect kidney test results.
• Hydration:
o Maintain normal hydration unless otherwise advised.
• Avoid Heavy Exercise:
o Avoid strenuous activity before the test, as it can affect creatinine levels
