Description
Why It’s Done:
The KFT/RFT is performed to:
1. Assess Kidney Health:
o Detect early signs of kidney disease or damage.
2. Monitor Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):
o Track progression and response to treatment.
3. Investigate Symptoms:
o Symptoms like swelling, fatigue, changes in urine output, or unexplained high blood pressure.
4. Evaluate Electrolyte Imbalance:
o Diagnose problems related to sodium, potassium, and acid-base balance.
5. Monitor Effects of Medications:
o Check kidney function before and during treatment with drugs that can affect the kidneys.
Preparation:
• Fasting:
o Usually 8-12 hours fasting is recommended before the blood sample is taken. Water is allowed.
• Medications:
o Inform your doctor about all medications, as some can affect kidney test results.
• Hydration:
o Maintain normal hydration unless otherwise advised.
• Avoid Heavy Exercise:
o Avoid strenuous activity before the test, as it can affect creatinine levels
