Description
Why It’s Done:
• To diagnose cancers: This test is often used in the diagnosis of cancer through biopsy samples, where tissue is examined for malignant cells.
• To detect infections: It helps in identifying infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi through cytological examination of tissue samples.
• To evaluate inflammation: This test aids in determining the extent and type of inflammation in various tissues.
• To guide treatment decisions: The results of the test help in determining whether a treatment plan should be altered or further diagnostic workup is needed.
Preparation:
• Fasting is generally not required, unless specifically instructed for other tests that may be involved (e.g., blood tests before biopsy).
• The sample is usually collected via biopsy or aspiration from the affected area, such as a needle biopsy, surgical biopsy, or body fluid aspiration.
• No specific preparation is needed by the patient for the slide preparation itself.
• Post-procedure care: If a biopsy or aspiration was involved, the healthcare provider may give post-procedure care instructions such as avoiding heavy activity for a short period or caring for any wound created during sample collection.
• Inform the healthcare provider about any medications, allergies, or underlying health conditions that could affect the procedure.
