Why It’s Done:
• To evaluate growth disorders in children and adolescents (e.g., short stature, delayed growth).
• To assess for growth hormone deficiency or excess in adults.
• To help diagnose conditions like:
o Acromegaly (excess GH in adults)
o Gigantism (excess GH in children)
o Growth hormone deficiency
• To monitor treatment effectiveness in patients receiving growth hormone therapy.
Preparation:
• Fasting is usually not required, but follow your doctor’s instructions.
• The test requires a blood sample, typically drawn from a vein in your arm.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any medications (especially steroids or hormone therapies)
o Recent illness or stress, as these can affect IGF-1 levels
o Liver or kidney conditions, which may influence test results
