The Influenza Virus A – IgM test detects the presence of IgM antibodies specific to Influenza A virus in the blood. IgM antibodies are the first antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an infection, indicating a recent or current infection.
This blood test helps identify if a person has recently been infected with Influenza A, which is a common cause of seasonal flu outbreaks.

Description

Why It’s Done:

The test is performed to:
1. Diagnose Recent Influenza A Infection:
o Confirm if flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, body aches) are caused by Influenza A.
2. Differentiate Influenza A from Other Respiratory Illnesses:
o Help doctors choose appropriate treatment and management.
3. Epidemiological Surveillance:
o Track flu outbreaks and monitor infection rates.

Preparation:

• Fasting:
o Not required. You may eat and drink normally before the test.
• Timing:
o The test is most reliable when done within the first week of symptom onset, as IgM antibodies appear early in infection.
• Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider about any antiviral medications or immunosuppressants you are taking.
• Sample Collection:
o A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm.
