Description
Why It’s Done:
The CD68 IHC test is performed to:
• Identify macrophages and histiocytes in tissue, especially in inflammatory and infectious conditions.
• Diagnose histiocytic sarcoma or monocytic leukemia, where CD68 positivity supports cell lineage.
• Differentiate soft tissue tumors, such as distinguishing between liposarcomas and histiocytic lesions.
• Evaluate granulomas in diseases like tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, or fungal infections.
• Assist in diagnosing certain lymphomas where histiocyte presence is part of the tumor microenvironment.
CD68 can also be used in tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) research, which is important in cancer immunology.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is required from the patient.
• The test is conducted on a tissue sample obtained via biopsy or surgical excision.
• If you are scheduled for a biopsy, your doctor may advise:
o Fasting (if sedation or anesthesia is needed)
o Medication adjustments
o Post-procedure recovery instructions
Always follow your physician’s recommendations regarding any pre-procedure instructions.
