The Basic Lymphoma Panel using Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a diagnostic test used to evaluate lymphoid tissue for the presence and type of lymphoma. The panel includes a set of antibodies (CD markers and IgM) that help identify specific immune cell types based on the proteins they express.

Markers Included:
• CD3: Marker for T-lymphocytes.
• CD15: Associated with Hodgkin’s lymphoma (especially Reed-Sternberg cells).
• CD20: Marker for B-lymphocytes.
• CD30: Also seen in Hodgkin’s lymphoma and some T-cell lymphomas.
• CD45: Common leukocyte antigen; present on most white blood cells.
• CD45RO: Expressed on memory T-cells.
• IgM: Immunoglobulin M, an antibody produced by B-cells; used to evaluate B-cell lineage and activity.

Description

Why It’s Done:

This test is commonly ordered when lymphoma is suspected. It helps in:
• Differentiating between types of lymphoma (e.g., B-cell vs. T-cell lymphomas).
• Confirming the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s or Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
• Guiding treatment planning by identifying specific immunophenotypes.
• Assessing abnormal lymphoid proliferation in lymph nodes or other tissues.

Preparation:

• No special preparation is typically needed from the patient.
• The test is performed on tissue samples obtained via biopsy.
• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking or existing health conditions before the biopsy.
• The biopsy procedure might require local or general anesthesia, depending on the site.
