Description
Why It’s Done:
The IgM test is commonly used for:
• Detecting recent or current infections, such as hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, or COVID-19.
• Diagnosing immune system disorders, including IgM deficiency or monoclonal gammopathy.
• Evaluating autoimmune conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
• Differentiating between acute and past infections, when paired with IgG testing.
• Monitoring response to infections or immunizations.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is typically required.
• The test is done via a blood sample, usually drawn from a vein in your arm.
• Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you’re taking, as some drugs can affect antibody levels.
• Fasting is not required unless other tests are being done simultaneously.
