The HSV I & II IgM Antibody Test is a blood test used to detect IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to a recent or primary infection with Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2).

• HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes (cold sores).
• HSV-2 typically causes genital herpes.
IgM antibodies are typically the first to appear after infection, often within the first 1 to 2 weeks, making this test useful for early detection. However, the test cannot always distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections clearly and may occasionally give false positives due to cross-reactivity.

Description

Why It’s Done:

The HSV I & II IgM test is ordered to:
• Diagnose a recent or primary HSV infection, especially when symptoms are present (e.g., sores, blisters, fever).
• Evaluate individuals with new or unexplained herpes-like symptoms.
• Test pregnant women suspected of a recent herpes infection to assess the risk to the baby.
• Assess neonatal herpes or suspected herpes infection in infants.
• Investigate acute infections in immunocompromised patients.
Note: For determining a past infection, an HSV IgG test is more appropriate.

Preparation:

• No fasting is required.
• No special preparation is needed.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you are:
o Taking any antiviral medications.
o Experiencing symptoms such as sores, itching, or fever.
o Recently exposed to someone with known herpes infection
