Why It’s Done:
This test is used to:
• Determine previous exposure to HSV-1, even if the person has no symptoms.
• Diagnose asymptomatic infections, especially in people at risk of transmitting or contracting herpes.
• Evaluate individuals with recurrent oral or genital lesions.
• Assess pregnant women to estimate the risk of neonatal herpes transmission.
• Screen blood or organ donors for HSV-1 infection.
• Support the diagnosis in cases of suspected herpes encephalitis.
Preparation:
• No special preparation is usually required.
• You do not need to fast before the test.
• Inform your doctor about any:
o Recent symptoms (e.g., cold sores, fever, body aches).
o History of herpes infection or known exposure.
o Antiviral medications you are currently using.
