Description
Why It’s Done:
The HSV (1+2) IgG test is commonly used to:
• Detect past herpes infections, even if asymptomatic.
• Differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections (if the test is type-specific).
• Screen individuals with a partner who has herpes.
• Assess pregnant women to reduce the risk of transmitting herpes to the baby.
• Support diagnosis in cases of recurrent symptoms (oral/genital lesions).
• Evaluate potential causes of unexplained neurological symptoms (e.g., encephalitis).
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is required.
• You can eat and drink normally before the test.
• Inform your doctor if you:
o Have had recent symptoms (sores, burning, itching).
o Are taking antiviral medications.
o Have had known exposure to someone with herpes.
