Description
Why It’s Done:
This test is recommended to:
• Screen for high-risk HPV types that are known to cause cervical, anal, penile, or throat cancers.
• Follow up abnormal Pap smear results in women.
• Monitor women with a history of cervical dysplasia or precancerous changes.
• Assess HPV infection in men and people with genital warts or suspected HPV-related lesions.
• Aid in the diagnosis of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis or HPV-related oropharyngeal cancers.
• Support routine screening in women over 30 as part of co-testing with a Pap test.
Preparation:
• For women:
o Avoid douching, vaginal creams, or intercourse for 24–48 hours before the test.
o The sample is usually collected during a pelvic exam.
• For men or oral/anal testing:
o Follow instructions based on the sample collection site.
• No fasting is required.
• Inform your healthcare provider of:
o Any recent infections, bleeding, or menstrual cycle details.
o Use of topical or internal medications in the test area.
