Description
Why It’s Done:
The HPLC Hb Electrophoresis Test is typically ordered to:
• Diagnose hemoglobinopathies, such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, and other inherited blood disorders.
• Screen individuals for sickle cell disease or trait, especially in newborns or patients with family histories of these conditions.
• Monitor known hemoglobin disorders in patients who are already diagnosed with conditions like sickle cell anemia.
• Evaluate unexplained anemia or other blood-related symptoms.
• Help in the genetic counseling process for couples planning to have children and who are carriers of hemoglobinopathies.
Preparation:
• No fasting or special preparation is usually required for the test.
• Ensure the healthcare provider is aware of:
o Any symptoms like fatigue, jaundice, pain, or weakness.
o Family history of hemoglobin disorders or other genetic conditions.
o Recent blood transfusions (which may interfere with the results).
The test is generally performed using a blood sample, which is drawn from a vein in your arm.
