The HIV I & II ELISA is a screening blood test used to detect antibodies against HIV-1 and HIV-2, the viruses responsible for causing AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
• The ELISA technique uses enzyme-linked antibodies to detect HIV-specific antibodies in the blood sample.
• It is a highly sensitive method and is typically used as the first step in HIV diagnosis.
• If positive, the result is usually confirmed with a Western blot, immunoblot, or PCR-based test.

Description

Why It’s Done (Purpose):

1. Screen for HIV Infection:
o Commonly used in routine screenings, blood banks, and during pre-surgical evaluations.
2. Diagnose HIV Infection:
o In individuals with high-risk behavior, symptoms of HIV, or recent exposure to the virus.
3. Protect Pregnancies:
o Pregnant women are often screened to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
4. Ensure Safe Medical Practices:
o Used to screen organ and blood donors to prevent transmission through transfusion or transplant.

Preparation Guidelines:

• No fasting or special preparation is needed for this test.
• A blood sample will be collected from a vein in the arm.
• Inform your doctor about:
o Any recent HIV exposure or symptoms.
o Use of PrEP or PEP (HIV prevention medication), as this can affect the results.
• Be aware that there is a window period (typically 3–8 weeks) after exposure when antibodies may not yet be detectable.
