Description
Why It’s Done (Purpose):
1. Diagnose Histoplasmosis:
o Especially in patients with fever, cough, fatigue, chest pain, or pneumonia-like symptoms in areas where histoplasmosis is endemic (e.g., Ohio and Mississippi River valleys).
2. Investigate Chronic Fungal Infections:
o For suspected chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis or disseminated disease in immunocompromised individuals (e.g., HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients).
3. Support Other Diagnostic Methods:
o Often used along with antigen detection, cultures, and imaging studies for a more accurate diagnosis.
Preparation Guidelines:
• No special preparation is needed for this blood test.
• Fasting is not required.
• Inform your healthcare provider about:
o Any current symptoms or recent travel to endemic areas.
o Any history of fungal infections or immune disorders.
o Use of immunosuppressive medications.
