The Histopathology Biopsy – Medium Specimen test involves the microscopic examination of a moderately sized tissue sample obtained from the body to identify abnormalities or disease processes. This biopsy is generally larger than a punch or needle biopsy but smaller than a large excisional biopsy, and may be obtained during minor surgery or endoscopic procedures.
• The sample is processed in a pathology lab, stained with special dyes (e.g., H&E stain), and examined under a microscope by a pathologist.
• It helps evaluate the architecture, cellular detail, and presence of disease in the sampled tissue.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

    This test is ordered to:
    • Diagnose tumors or masses, whether benign or malignant
    • Evaluate abnormal growths, ulcers, or persistent symptoms
    • Investigate findings from imaging studies (CT, MRI, ultrasound)
    • Detect infections, inflammatory conditions, or autoimmune diseases
    • Assist in treatment planning, surgical decisions, or disease monitoring
It is especially useful when a small biopsy is insufficient for diagnosis but a full surgical resection is not yet warranted.

    Preparation:

Preparation depends on how the specimen is obtained:
    • Fasting may be required if sedation or general anesthesia will be used.
    • Inform your doctor if you:
o Are taking blood thinners (e.g., aspirin, warfarin)
    o Have bleeding disorders
o Have allergies to anesthesia or antiseptics
o Are pregnant or on medications
    • Follow all pre-procedure instructions, which may include temporarily stopping medications or arranging for someone to accompany you.
After collection, the tissue is preserved in formalin, processed, and examined. The pathology report is typically available in 3 to 7 days, depending on the complexity.
