The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) I & II IgG test is a blood test used to detect IgG antibodies against Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an HSV infection and usually appear several weeks after initial exposure. The presence of IgG indicates a past or long-term infection, not a recent one.
• HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes (cold sores).
• HSV-2 is primarily associated with genital herpes.
This test helps differentiate between the two types of HSV infections.

Description

Why It’s Done:

The HSV I & II IgG test is performed to:
• Determine if a person has been previously infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2.
• Help diagnose asymptomatic HSV infections.
• Evaluate recurrent symptoms such as genital sores, oral lesions, or neurological issues.
• Assess exposure in pregnant women, to reduce risk of neonatal herpes.
• Screen individuals with a partner known to have herpes.
This test is especially useful for people who may not show visible symptoms but are concerned about prior exposure.

Preparation:

• No special preparation is required.
• A blood sample will be drawn from a vein, usually from the arm.
• Inform your doctor about any ongoing infections or recent vaccinations, if applicable.
