Description
Why It’s Done:
The Hepatitis B Core Total test is typically performed to:
• Diagnose a current or past Hepatitis B infection: If someone is suspected to have been exposed to Hepatitis B (due to symptoms such as jaundice or contact with an infected person), the test can help determine if they’ve had or currently have the infection.
• Confirm immunity or prior exposure: If a person has had Hepatitis B vaccination, a positive Anti-HBc test may indicate past infection instead of vaccination.
• Assess risk of transmission: People with chronic Hepatitis B infection can transmit the virus, so this test helps evaluate the infectious status.
• Monitor people with chronic Hepatitis B infection: It is used to evaluate ongoing infection and immune response in individuals with chronic HBV.
Preparation:
Preparation for the Hepatitis B Core Total test is minimal:
1. Fasting:
o Fasting is not required for this test.
2. Medications:
o Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, as some treatments may affect liver function and antibody levels.
3. Hydration:
o Ensure you are well-hydrated before the test, as this helps with the blood draw.
4. Procedure:
o A blood sample will be drawn, typically from a vein in your arm.
5. Timing:
o This test can be done at any time, but it’s often done as part of a broader liver function test or when investigating potential liver diseases.
