Description
Why It’s Done:
The serum Hib antigen test is used to:
• Detect invasive Hib infections, including:
o Bacterial meningitis
o Septicemia (bloodstream infection)
o Epiglottitis
o Pneumonia (particularly in young children)
• Aid in early diagnosis, especially in children and infants where rapid treatment is critical.
• Support diagnosis when cultures are negative or antibiotics have been started, which may reduce the sensitivity of culture tests.
This test is most useful in pediatric settings or in cases where collecting cerebrospinal fluid is not immediately feasible.
Preparation:
Preparation for the serum Hib antigen test is minimal but important:
1. Fasting:
o Fasting is not usually required, but follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider.
2. Sample Collection:
o A blood sample will be drawn from a vein, typically in the arm.
3. Medication Disclosure:
o Inform your doctor if you or your child has received a recent Hib vaccination (may cause false positives).
o List any current antibiotic use, as it may affect test interpretation.
4. Comfort Measures for Children:
o In pediatric patients, it may help to bring a comfort item or distraction to reduce anxiety during the blood draw.
