Why It’s Done:
This test is performed:
• To screen for gestational diabetes, a condition that can develop during pregnancy and affect both mother and baby.
• To assess insulin resistance and glucose intolerance during pregnancy.
• To help prevent complications, such as high birth weight, preterm birth, or the need for cesarean delivery.
It is typically done between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy or earlier if the patient has risk factors such as obesity, history of GDM, or family history of diabetes.
Preparation:
Proper preparation is important for accurate test results:
1. Fasting:
o You must fast for 8 to 10 hours before the test. Only water is permitted during this time.
2. Diet:
o Maintain a normal carbohydrate-rich diet for at least 3 days prior to the test unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
3. Medication:
o Inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking. Certain medications may interfere with glucose levels.
4. Avoid Stress and Intense Physical Activity:
o Physical exertion can affect blood sugar levels. Stay relaxed before and during the test.
5. Time Commitment:
o The full test takes around 3–4 hours, as samples are collected over a period of time. Bring something to keep you comfortable and occupied during the wait
