The Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) or Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) with 100 grams glucose and 4 blood samples is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate how the body processes sugar over time. It is primarily used to diagnose gestational diabetes in pregnant women and, in some cases, to assess glucose metabolism for other forms of diabetes.
In this test:
• A fasting blood glucose sample is taken first.
• The patient is then given a drink containing 100 grams of glucose dissolved in water.
• Blood samples are collected at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after consuming the glucose.

    Description

    Why It’s Done:

The GTT / OGTT with 4 samples is commonly performed for the following reasons:
    1. To diagnose Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) – especially between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy.
    2. To evaluate impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).
    3. To monitor patients at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
    4. To confirm abnormal fasting glucose levels with more detailed assessment.

    Preparation:

To ensure accurate results, the following preparation is essential:
    1. Fasting Required:
o You must fast for at least 8–10 hours before the test.
o Only water is allowed during this period.
    2. Avoid Certain Medications and Substances:
o Inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking. Some drugs can affect glucose levels.
o Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking for at least 12 hours before the test.
    3. Healthy Diet Before the Test:
o Maintain a balanced diet including carbohydrates for at least 3 days before the test (unless advised otherwise).
    4. Physical Activity:
o Avoid intense exercise the day before and the day of the test.
    5. Duration:
o The test takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, so plan accordingly.
