Description
Why It’s Done:
Your doctor may recommend an FSH test for various reasons depending on your age and gender:
In Women:
• To evaluate the cause of irregular or absent menstrual periods
• To diagnose menopause or perimenopause
• To assess ovarian function and fertility status
• To help diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or ovarian failure
In Men:
• To evaluate low sperm count or infertility
• To assess testicular function or hypogonadism
In Children:
• To investigate early or delayed puberty
Preparation:
• Fasting: Not required.
• Menstrual Cycle Timing: For women, the test may be scheduled on specific days of the menstrual cycle (commonly between days 2–5) for accurate results—follow your doctor’s advice.
• Medication Disclosure: Inform your doctor about any hormones, birth control pills, or fertility drugs you’re taking, as these can affect FSH levels.
• General: No special dietary restrictions; continue usual activities unless instructed otherwise.
