Description
Why It’s Done:
FNAC is used to:
• Evaluate lumps or masses in the body to determine if they are benign, malignant, or inflammatory.
• Aid in the diagnosis of cancers, especially of the breast, thyroid, and lymph nodes.
• Guide treatment decisions, such as whether surgical removal or further testing is needed.
• Provide a quick and minimally invasive alternative to surgical biopsy with quicker results.
• Monitor ongoing conditions or previously diagnosed cancers to check for recurrence.
Preparation:
• Fasting: Generally not required, unless specified by the doctor.
• Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking, especially blood thinners (like aspirin or warfarin), as they can affect bleeding and may require adjustments.
• Consent: You will need to sign a consent form, as FNAC is a minor procedure that requires your approval.
• Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easier access to the area being tested. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown depending on the site.
• Anesthesia: Local anesthesia may be used to numb the area, especially for sensitive parts of the body
