EMG (Electromyography) is a diagnostic test that evaluates the electrical activity in muscles and the nerves controlling them.
When done for a single lower limb, the test focuses on either the left or right leg—including muscles in the thigh, calf, and foot.

This test helps diagnose:
• Nerve root compression (e.g. sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy)
• Peripheral neuropathy
• Muscle disorders
• Nerve damage following injury or surgery
• Localized leg weakness or numbness

    Description

    Test Preparation

     Clothing:
    • Wear loose pants or shorts so your leg is easily accessible.
    • You may be asked to wear a gown during the test.
     Skin Care:
    • Bathe or shower before the test to clean the skin.
    • Do not apply any lotion, cream, or oil on the leg on the day of the test, as it can interfere with results.
     Medications:
    • Take your usual medications unless told otherwise.
    • Inform your doctor if you are on:
    o Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, aspirin)
    o Have a bleeding disorder
     Devices/Conditions:
    • Let the technician know if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other implanted medical devices.
    Diet:
    • No fasting needed. You may eat and drink normally before the test.
